What are County FIPS Codes

What are County FIPS Codes?

FIPS codes are unique 5-digit geographic place codes applied to states, counties, and certain areas of possession within the United States. The acronym “FIPS” stands for Federal Information Processing System and was established in the 1970s by the government agency NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology).

FIPS codes were created to establish government-mandated industry standards and were used between government agencies and technical organizations for consistency and uniform practice. The current FIPS codes in use are the FIPS 5-2 (state codes) and FIPS 6-4 (county codes). These codes were replaced in 2008 by INCITS 38-2009 for the 5-2 code and INCITS 31-2009 for the 6-4 code.

However, FIPS codes are still used by numerous federal organizations across the United States.

When searching for Properties in PropertyScout.io you can search via Parcel Number, but you don’t need to know the FIPS code, you will only need to enter city and county and we’ll find the FIPS code for you and render the property you are researching
